The Proposal

The Put It to the People websiteʻs sole purpose is to tell you about our pro-gun, pro Second Amendment rights initiative petition. To sign or circulate this petition contact us at putittothepeople@gmail.com, or click the “signing location” button above for a list of permanent signing locations. If enough registered Colorado voters sign this petition, this measure will be placed on the ballot in 2014 “as a proposed change to the Constitution of Colorado”. Our proposal will send HB 13-1224 and its arbitrary clauses to the voters of Colorado. We deserve a vote on arbitrary public policy.

This recently enacted anti-gun law blatantly violates the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, which mandates that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”.

Put It to the People is a grassroots organization whose sole purpose is circulating this petition, eventually amending the Colorado Constitution and subsequently reinforcing gun ownersʼ rights. We are independent of and not affiliated with any other gun rights organization. And since we need in excess of 100,000, signatures we are asking for your help by signing and circulating petitions and by donating to pay for office supplies.

The ballot title and submission clause designated and fixed by the Initiative Title Setting Review Board is:

Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado Constitution prohibiting any restriction on the purchase or possession of ammunition storage and feeding devices other than a restriction enacted by a voter-approved law?

The proposed Constitutional Amendment is:

SECTION 32. GUN MAGAZINES — NO LIMITATION OR RESTRICTION

NO LAW, EXCEPT A LAW ENACTED BY A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE, SHALL RESTRICT OR LIMIT THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO PURCHASE OR POSSESS AMMUNITION STORAGE AND FEEDING DEVICES OF ANY CAPACITY.

    I heard you guys doing an interview on the radio. I thought this web site was set up as a petition to overturn the gun control laws. I was trying to find the petition to sign it. Email me back if this is still a go. I know a LOT of people who would like to sign.

    • Email sent. We anticipate being able to start the signature process June 1 depending on our volunteers.

        Lots of us in the mountains that aren’t close to any signing location…can you not set up a way to do it on line? This would exponentially increase signaturres

      • Unfortunately, state law requires that the petitions be signed in person. We could use more captains to reach mountain communities. If you know anyone interested, please have them contact us.

        We can always mail out some sections to circulate or take a drive ourselves. We’ll find a way to reach you.

    • Thanks John. However, this can’t be an “online” petition. There are very strict requirements to getting this placed on the statewide ballot. The main requirement is that a person has to physically collect and witness signatures of registered voters. No online slacktivism here!

  4. Are there any covering the other laws in particular the backround checks?
    Who is the captian in Grand Junction?

      At this time, there are no other public proposals covering the other laws. We took up the banner for this particular fight because we saw a way that we could make an effective difference. We think the other items will have to be addressed by voting for the appropriate politicians.

      We’d love to have you. We’ll send you an email shortly to get you going. We are the only proposal so far. No one’s taken up the banner on the other issues. We suspect that there’s an appetite to let our rights “lapse” and use that as ammunition to motivate people to vote a certain way in the next election. Our philosophy is to not sit around.

    You have MAJOR support on the Western Slope. We actually want to see the State split at the Continental Divide and have a “West Colorado”, but, that’s not likely. Anyway, where do we get this petition moving on the Western Slope. I know that our local Sportsman’s Warehouse was averaging $30,000.00 a day in ammo sales after the school shooting this fall and that number has not dropped on purchase demand, only on supply.

    The Front Range oddly likes to forget that the Western Slope exists, but in doing so, they have forgotten the HUGE number of old world Colorado mountain men. And we will not let our gun rights go without a fight.

    One way to fight this is to use the same laws the liberals use in stopping freedom of religion. They did this by connecting the 1st and 14th Amendment together.

    In Cantwell v. State of Connecticut the Court held that the free exercise of religion is one of the “liberties” protected by the due process clause of the 14th Amendment and thus applied it to the states. The freedom to believe is absolute, but the freedom to act is not absolute.

    Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

    Thus if the 14th Amendment is connected to the 1st Amendment, it is connected to all Amendments. Therefore you could argue that the 2nd and 14th Amendments prohibits states from depriving people of guns, pars, ammunition and anything else without due process.

    I live in the South-eastern plains, Prowers County. Where do I go in my area to sign the petition. So far, everything I’m seeing is in the Front Range. That’s 3 to 4 hours away.
